Dylan’s Desert Island Revue – Final Compilation Release

On the 4th September this year I initiated a project on the Bob Dylan Expecting Rain – Rare Recordings forum. The project entailed compiling Bob Dylan’s greatest live recordings, which are felt by members as superseding their original. One member named MW described the aim as follows: ‘If you were stuck on a desert island, is there an unreleased live recording of a song that you would would want or could happily live with in place of the official studio version (or bootleg). From that description we derived the final compilation release title – Dylan’s Desert Island Revue.

Little over 2 months and 89 nominations later, below is the 4 volume Dylan’s Desert Island Revue (DDIR) compilation:

Bridge of Spies 2015

Bridge of Spies
While it is indeed a political drama about the cold war, I just didn’t expect it to be so entertaining.
It feels more like watching Indiana Jones, as James Donovan travels to Berlin at the time the wall was being completed to negotiate an exchange with the Russians. I was expecting this movie to be like Lincoln, bogged down in lots of talk and brow raising. Don’t get me wrong, Lincoln is a very fine movie, but Bridge of Spies is everything Spielberg is capable of. The movie’s visuals were large and epic. It is an impeccably rendered recreation of these important moments of modern world history.

Watching Hanks play Donovan who is swept into an overwhelming situation and just keeps his cool and his charm is just highly enjoyable. The combination of Coen Brothers writing and Speilberg has worked wonders. The Coens I think brought a sense of realism to things, but also stylization; the way characters talk at times there’s a lot of things where people try to figure the other person out, which is fascinating to watch. Not to mention Tom Hanks, who is just so stoic in this.

It’s early days, but this movie will be one of the frontrunners come Oscar time.

Seattle Music

The big music blasting the young hearts and minds of the early 90s was ignited from Seattle. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Sound Garden were pumping the airwaves with a vast array of steely melancholic acoustic tunes. It enchanted disenfranchised students like us and we explored ways and means to experience obscure beatnik places in Canberra that embraced such music.  It embodied an Age of Release. Like flower children in the sixties we understood we were children of this movement. We read similar books, dug the same music, eventually took the same drugs and even had similar thoughts, for all we knew.

The Screen

It seems all I do these days is stare at the bright white screen. The computer has the gall to stare right back at me as if it knows better. It flickers to black … in the reflection I notice my protruding belly. Where did that come from?
I reckon it happened after I poured that VB into my head. I pull up my shirt and pat my thirty-year-old hairy tummy in soft circles, trying to soothe something bad about myself. I notice my chest jiggling too.
It niggles me also that I might need a haircut and a shave. My hair is turning into the colour of ashes. It’s nearly getting too cumbersome to handle … The pulsating beat of Christine Anu’s song “Island Home” snaps away my self-pity.

Six years I’ve been in the city,
Every night I dream of the sea,
They say home is where you find it,
Will this place ever satisfy me?

Becoming Rich and Successful

People in their 20’s make it or break it. Here are my personal dos and donts:

  1. Buy the cheapest car that goes, only if you absolutely require a car.
  2. Don’t ever own/use credit cards.
  3. Don’t pay rent unless you want to make another person rich and waste your money.
  4. Don’t have a wild nightlife and don’t chase the other sex and dine them.
  5. Wear condoms unless you are willing to shell out about $250,000US on an accident.
  6. Don’t marry anyone or live with anyone unless it’s absolutely necessary. See car.
  7. Own a business or venture where people give YOU money and/or invest in something secure where your money works for you.

With regards to being successful, look at Donald Trump. He’s of course a human turd, but a very confident one. Confidence exudes success and society responds very favourably to people who are confident despite how shallow or dangerous there opinions may be. Superficiality has been the flavour of society, well since society began and so has, what is deemed to be successful.

The Magazine

I remember when I was fifteen I was given a mangled Hustler magazine in which all the women’s breasts were the size of watermelons. So I took it home and stashed it. I had heard they were strokebooks, but I couldn’t really fathom that since my mother lived under the same roof.  I did consult the magazine, mainly the plumpish New Orleans centrefold, who reminded me of my biology teacher when she sat on the lab bench dangling her legs apart, stretching her short skirt outwards.  Suffice to say, student’s fumbled their pens more than usual.
I once asked her in class, near Sydney where I grew up, ‘Do I detect somewhere an American ‘yat’ accent’?
‘Huh, well I could have sworn….’.

If you could read my mind

I fluttered my innocent eyelids at this gorgeous army psychologist.
She asked, “Do you have any girlfriends?”
But really I was thinking, “Do you have any boyfriends? If not, would you consider sleeping with a guy twelve years your junior?”

‘If you could read my mind love,
What a tale my thoughts could tell.
Just like an old time movie,
‘Bout a ghost from a wishing well.’

– If you could read my mind – Gordon Lightfoot

Heaven Knows What (2015)

Every two weeks or so I check out the movie database Rotten Tomatoes which lists amongst other things – latest release DVDs and the movie info of this one caught my eye.

HEAVEN KNOWS WHAT blends fiction, formalism and raw documentary as it follows a young heroin addict (Arielle Holmes) who finds mad love in the streets of New York.’ – Rotten Tomatoes

Truly didn’t expect anything out of this, which is why it was such a huge surprise.  Its near-flawless as far as documentary-style films go. Heaven Knows What is relatively aimless which might turn many people off, but thats what I adored about it. Raw, real and totally honest. The performances here are compelling. Probably the best movie I have seen which depicts homelessness since Mike Leigh’s Naked.

It is based on the seven year cycle where something occurs which profoundly changes the World, for example, September 11 2001 and the 2008 Financial Crisis and it’s purported we are due for something in September 2015. Perhaps something extra large because 2015 occurs on the 49 year cycle (7 x 7 year cycle) called the Jubilee year.

I remember many warnings like these were published before 1/1/2000 and in 2012, but nothing occured and we are already into late September, so it would seem to be just another hoax based on an ancient superstition. What doesn’t seem such a hoax, at least not to me, there does seem something large looming. An economic crash and civil protests, the likes that most of us have not experienced, could be imminent. The recent freefall of the Chinese stockmarket and the over-valued American currency could lead to a world-wide financial meltdown in coming days/months. Of course I hope I am wrong, but the signs do seem to be there. It may also just be the pessimist in me – ‘when have you ever felt anything good is going to happen’?

The first link here includes the jawdropping 60 minutes report about Chinese realestate bubble.

The link below is by Paul Mladjenovicwho who describes that a world stockmarket crash will occur in months.

This message by Ron Paul also describes that things are mirroring the conditions that existed in 2008 except much worse. This link is focused more on the American currency.

I do not offer to be an expert on financial markets, so I put it to you the well-informed motley WordPress crew – what do you think of all of these claims? I thought it would be interesting to gather a sense of where you think we are heading, financially, economically and military speaking given the current state of world affairs? A broad subject, I know, but an intriguing one none the less.

There does seem to be an above average recent outpouring of doomsday type messages from otherwise fairly respectable persons about an impending crisis, that being a financial one.

Politicians will always be retiscent to reveal the true nature of a negative economic situation for obvious reasons. Remaining optimistic is essentual to building economic growth and sustaining confidence in markets. I suppose if I look at my own concerns a little closer, it was the newly elected (although some may scorn my choice of wording there) Prime Minister of Australia Malcolm Turnbull whose interview on the 7.30 report made me sit up and take notice. He was so particularly positive about the state of the economy, which is probably every leader’s modus operandi that you might not think to notice, but it was just the way he was pushing it so hard that left me slightly baffled. Otherwise, I commend him on his honesty. Haha

The Pamphlets

I read countless brochures and paraphernalia. I had the pamphlets a long time and looked at them everyday, lying on my bed for what seemed like hours on end, gazing longingly at the glossy photos.

This is where it began for me. Dreams can stop being faraway things, the stuff of other people’s lives, and start to enter the daily world of what you do. It gave me a sense of purpose and belonging, pride in an otherwise banal existence of daily meat and potatoes around the family dining room table.

This, I thought, is how someone begins to live a dream. They open a pamphlet one day and suddenly know what needs to be done and sets about doing it –
making more pamphlets.
