Australian military to fight against IS militants

Tony Abbott

As reported by ABC News Australia:

Australian fighter jets and about 600 military personnel, including special forces soldiers, will be deployed to the Middle East this week. ….Prime Minister Tony Abbott said the United States had specifically requested Australia contribute to an international campaign against the militants, who have captured large swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria.

Reaction to this news:

Why  haven’t we Australians had a full parliamentary debate about our commitment to this? Have we got a strategy? Do we have goals set up? Do we have an exit strategy?

This is not an humanitarian exercise. Obviously the beheading of three westerners, horrific though it is, is much more outrageous than Israel killing hundreds of innocent children. This is about Oil in Iraq and little else. If we were such humanitarians we would surely have tried to stop the slaughter of 2.5 million Tamils in Sri Lanka in the last 10 years (and they are a member of the Commonwealth). Oh thats right, there is no Oil in Sri Lanka is there?  I have absolutely no objections taking out all of the villains in the Middle East. However, rather than blindly playing “Follow The Leader”, we should make damn sure that we know who these villains actually are! The horror and threat of IS seems real enough but would it not be more prudent to await action by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, UAE, Bahrain, Qatar and others in the immediate region – those who are directly threatened by this scourge – before we, who are an ocean away, become directly involved?

The Aussie Tea Party (Liberals) and right wing warriors generally simply don’t understand the concept of unintended consequences. They can’t be moderate any more. They react and spit at real or imagined foes, they want war and preferably perpetual war as outlined by the Republican ideologues during the odious Bush era in the USA who are the clear role models for this government. They love a crusade. Team Australia – World Police. Nothing like punching above your weight. Abbott loves it.

Oh and just don’t mention the (Iraq) War…the John Howard one justified on a tissue of lies. Remember? That went swimmingly – the unimaginable carnage, the groundwork nicely set for IS, the massive cost etc. And then they will lock up the people who are fleeing ISIL/ISIS/Syrian brutality calling them illegal.

Have we  stopped and thought about what we will face if and when we finish off IS? Arguably ISIS exist because of our previous Iraq war, our folly created them. They garner their support from Islamic outrage at western troops being on Islamic land and by us putting troops into this battle we will only make them stronger. Only Islamic troops can defeat ISIS because this will erode ISIS’s supporter base.
Some wise crack may say doing nothing is not an alternative.

I say yes, do nothing.
