I have been searching for Bob Dylan videos with Spanish subtitles and I came across this absolute gem for ‘Abandoned Love‘.
I like Abandoned Love a lot. It is probably in my top 30 from Mr D, because it is just so raw, more so than the popular ‘Sara’. It is a very mean spirited song packed with ‘raw’ emotions, as though he hasn’t had time to process them, or is it that he has tried and he can’t? He is struggling all the way through but he is trying to sound self assured despite his obvious bitterness. It’s full of contradictions. That’s the beauty of it. Sara on the other hand is like a post-processing account of his love for Sara. It’s straight down the line.
I cannot think of a more vulnerable Dylan song than Abandoned Love. If you see her say hello is in the same ballpark of vulnerability, but it’s not quite where AL is at.
I do not think that all expressions of emotion constitute expressions of vulnerability, but the dichotomy of emotions on display is striking. I do not know of another BD song where he is so clearly ‘struggling’ to grapple with his emotions.
What is also impressive is the person who put this video together which includes many pictures of Sara Dylan. The translation to Spanish is also excellent.
Are there any better videos of this song put to images that you know of?
The other video I saw which blew me away was Sinead O’connor singing ‘I Believe In You’
